Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer any in-person sessions?
The counseling is done through video calls. Everyone who gives this a try ends up liking it much better. It’s easy to just sign on to a session when you have a break in your day. The idea of having to drive down to an office every week just to meet starts to feel like a hassle.
When are you available?
I know when someone reaches out for help, they are ready to get started. I try to schedule the first appointment within a few days of our initial phone conversation. I’m flexible and want to find a day and time that works good for your schedule.
How long are sessions?
Sessions are 53 minutes, so about an hour, and done typically once per week. We have the option to meet more frequently at the beginning, and typically after some of the initial fires are out people move to every other week.
Do you take insurance?
I am in network with most major insurances. This includes BCBS, Aetna, Cigna, and United Healthcare. Clients that use insurance are only responsible for any deductibles or co-pays on the plan.
What is your cancellation policy?
I ask for a 24-hour notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. A $50 cancellation fee is applied to the CC on file if notice is not received 24 hours in advance.
What do you actually do in session?
Therapy starts with us getting to know each other. You help me to understand what challenges or difficulties you are currently going through. We will talk about what you are looking to get out of the counseling process. Then we will implement the interventions that will bring you toward your treatment goals.
How long is therapy?
The length of therapy is very much up to the client. Usually, we have made a good deal of progress on the initial concern within 8-12 sessions. Often times therapeutic discussion naturally flows into other concerns and areas of life. Some clients end up working with me for a while, doing some deep work, and enjoying having that extra support of a check-in every couple of weeks.
How do I set up an initial apt?
We start with a 15-minute phone call. On this consultation call, we will see if we are a good fit for working together by outlining your current problem and goal for counseling. I make sure I’m able to help you, and if you feel good about working with me, we set up an initial therapy appointment.
Do your clients receive HW in between sessions?
My clients don’t receive any written assignments for HW, and I wouldn’t give any reading unless someone asks specifically for some recommendations. The insights from the therapeutic discussion should lead to doing things differently during the week, and the behavioral change is where the focus is outside of session.
How do you start counseling sessions?
Well, my family is from the Midwest so I start my counseling sessions like I start most of my conversations. By talking about the most interesting thing there is… The Weather. And after some good complaints about the August heat and the rain we are ready to get into it.
Tell me about a funny experience you’ve had counseling.
During my Master’s program I completed several internships. One of them was a residential rehab program in England. Here I got wise to British street lingo, Bruv. Learning phrases like “a bit a Puff” and “back on the gear”. Now I know exactly what’s being said in Guy Ritchie movies, and feel like I’m back with the lads in Bristol whenever watching one on Netflix.
